On-premises accounts can take over cloud accounts (T1098, T1556.007)
Hard-match or soft-match protection is off, or Microsoft's temporary bypass of the July 2026 hard-match hardening is on. An on-premises account can then take over a cloud account that has no on-premises link.
Why it matters
An attacker who can create or change an on-premises account can set attributes that match a cloud user, and take that account over.
How GraphnAI finds it
It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Microsoft Entra ID.
It reads:
- 2 more GraphnAI analyses
Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical
Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.
- TheoreticalThis checkConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
- ConstrainedA constraint on it has been checked.
- ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.
Why there's no automatic fix
GraphnAI doesn't change directory synchronization settings yet.
How to fix it
Turn on blockCloudObjectTakeoverThroughHardMatchEnabled and blockSoftMatchEnabled, and turn off allowOnPremUpdateOfOnPremisesObjectIdentifierEnabled. They're set on the onPremisesSynchronization object through Microsoft Graph, not in the admin center.
